Passed Out

Vein Puncture Syndrome. That’s what it has been diagnosed as. I know you are thinking “What does veins and passing out have in common?” The answer is genes…

It all started when Cookie got a brain freeze. She screamed bloody murder (scared us all to death!) arched her back and went completely limp. Luckily I was standing next to her and caught her on her way down as she was sitting on a bar stool. We gently helped her to the floor and she was then wide awake as if nothing had happened. Strange. It happened about a month later…same situation…ice cream and a brain freeze than then the scream and limp. This time she was on a chair and I was again standing next to her and caught her arm to stop her fall.
2 time in 1 month…we took her to the Dr. - he referred us to a Neurologist.

My husband gets woozy when he sees or gives blood. Has for ever since he can remember. This is called vein puncture syndrome and is hereditary. Basically it means that when something happens, it makes them pass out. The Dr. has seen kids that when they bump their elbow they will pass out…with my daughter, it’s a brain freeze…stimulus = something cold, response = passing out.

It has been 2 years. We’ve eaten ice cream …lots! and nothing. Yesterday at Sams Club they had a taste test for frozen fruit. Cookie took too big of a bite and suddenly she was screaming (not as loud as before) and going limp. I was really worried that she was choking because it was a chunk of fruit, not ice cream.
Thankfully she was sitting in the basket of the cart by where I was so I caught her head. We had a crowd of staring people! It was great!

So I guess she hasn’t grown out of it…and from now on…when she eats cold things, she sits on the floor!!!

Wow that is scary!! I guess since you know what the stimulus always is, then you can be prepared. Do you tell her teachers? Just make sure she never eats ice cream while riding her bike or, later, driving a car!! LOL!
