Favorite Things

If I had read that title, I would be thinking of raindrops on roses, and wiskers on kittens, but today I’m talking about a little something different!

We have started a little nightly tradition at our house. It comes from a few different sources including a story my mom told me about and one of my favorite people, Nicki Keohohou. I will tell you more about how it came about after I tell you what we do…

About a month ago, we started having the kids tell us their favorite things just before bed. Jefe takes one kid and I take one and they tell us their 3 favorite things from the day…and then we trade kids. If he is not around, I have them take turns going first and then tell me. After they tell us 3 favorite things (or about 5 minutes, whichever is greater) we give them a big hug and a kiss, have them zip thier lips and run off to bed. Why has this turned out to be such a good thing? Well, it calms them down from their days, puts good thoughts in their minds before they go to sleep, gives them some one on one time and lets them know that what they say is important to us. It has been fabulous, AND they are going to sleep SO much better!

…It all came about after I heard Nicki speak to our Story Time Felts group (and a few other times). She was telling us about how important it is to focus on the good things from your day just before bed. It should have clicked then, but it took a story from my mom about a mother who wanted to spend a little quality time with her kids since her husband was away a lot, so the kids took turns telling her stories or whatever they wanted to talk about. So I combined the 2 after my kids tried to complain and tell me all the sad things from thier days!

This time is so cute and precious to us now. We love to hear what the kids have enjoyed about their days and all their little thoughts. They love to feel important too! (plus the time we save trying to calm them down once thier in bed is practically gone now, so it is well worth it!)
