Car Trip
Filed Under Kids, driving, food | Leave a Comment
Car trips just aren’t what they used to be even 5 years ago. Here we sit…hour 6 on our journey northward, the kids each in their car seats, and a 2 screen DVD player is keeping them mostly occupied. One screen for the back seat and one for the middle section. Tater is occasionally watching between his jabbering and naming the animals that come across the screen. Here I sit, typing on the laptop while Jefe drives.
We just stopped at McDonald’s for some chicken nuggets and french fries, so my kids are devouring their junk food dinner as we continue to drive.
I don’t know how people used to make 12 hour trips in the car before DVD players were portable. I seem to remember my mom telling me to “look out the window” but after it got dark, there isn’t much to see….
Aside from Tater dropping his bottle on the floor about every 20 minutes, life here in the Boam van is pretty peaceful.

Locked in…or out rather
Filed Under Kids, driving | 1 Comment
So as we are getting out of the car at Superkid’s preschool today, keys in the ignition, van running, 2 other kids strapped in, Superkid locks the doors and shuts the only door remaining open. Luckily it was a cool 55 degrees outside this morning. So, not wanting to come up with a solution right away, I finished walking Superkid to the door and said goodbye. He promptly announces to his teacher’s husband (who just happened to be home today) that we were locked out.
Lucky for me, he is a DPS officer (policeman) with locksmith training. ;o) It took him about 5 minutes to get my van unlocked and me on my way…but the whole time, the other 2 kids were yelling at me from inside the van becuase they wanted to leave! ;o) Thanks Mr. B! We sure appreciated you this morning!

The kids’ reaction to the news
Filed Under Kids, driving, laughter | Leave a Comment
So, after I picked up the kids from the sitter yesterday and while we were driving home, I decided to tell them of the news of their newest sister. Superkid was hoping for another boy until he figured out that if we had another boy there would be 4 boys and only 2 girls, so then he changed his mind so we could have 3 boys and 3 girls. Cookie has always wanted a sister.
After letting them guess for a minute, Superkid asks if the baby after this one can be a boy. I said that Heavenly Father would have to decide that and he promptly told everyone to fold thier arms and be queit. He then said the cutest prayer and asked if after this baby we could have a boy and then a girl again. It was so sweet and funny at the same time! ..l.so I guess we are having at least 2 more kids ;o)

Baby #4 is a Girl
Filed Under Kids, love | 2 Comments
So everything is looking good still, according to the ultrasound today. Baby is about 9 oz. and is a girl. Since I’m almost 20 weeks, there is little doubt. I will put some pics below. …Now to come up with a name …

A pretty smile…

Last night I went to the grocery store…not by choice mind you, but I was kind of forced into it. You see, Dairy Queen is mean enough to put on commercials about their blizzards on TV. Being pregnant it was the only thing I could think of, so I finally gave in to the craving and decided to drive into town. 15 minutes before the DQ closed I was parked in the drive thru and no one would help me! Then they shut of their lights …15 minutes early! (grumble) …So I decided to go into the grocery store.
Let me paint a picture for you. It is 10 at night. I have had a LONG day. 19 weeks pregnant, in my high-water pajama pants, tube socks, shirt that belly pokes out a little in showing my undershirt (I didn’t think I was going to be making a public appearance), slippers, uncombed hair and waddling a little bit.
So here I stand in the ice cream aisle, trying to decide which kind of chocolate ice cream will satisfy the need I was having. I decided on the “Death by Chocolate” kind…I figured if I was gonna die, it was going to be via chocolate ;o). The friendly ice cream stocking guy was talking to me as I was standing there and as I was turning to leave a friend of his walked up. I smiled as I passed (mostly because I was thinking of the yummy ice cream waiting for me when I got home) and he says “That’s the most beautiful smile I have seen in a long time, Thank you!”
That comment took me back a little but I smiled a little brighter…as I continued to walk (or waddle rather) to pay and then out to my car…Sometimes all it takes is one little comment to brighten someones entire mood and outlook on life!
So thank you to the compete stranger at the grocery store…you made this frumpy pregnant lady feel a little less frumpy!

Today I made…
Filed Under food | 3 Comments
One of my goals this year is to blog more! So far, so good, right?!
This morning I made some yummy stuff and wanted to share the recipies with my friends in case you want to go healthy too!
First I made some granola. My kids perfer this to cold cereal (even the chocolate kind!) and then I made myself something we always called “Southwick Special” growing up. It is a recipe from my aunt and I love it…my kids, not so much…but more for me! Below are the recipes:
Granola-
This recipe is from Make a Mix Cookery page 22. It is officially called Granola Mix.
10 cups old fashioned oats
1 cup wheat germ
1/2 lb shredded coconut (I don’t put this in)
2 cups raw sunflower seeds
1 cup sesame seeds
3 cups other nuts (optional)
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
1 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup molasses
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
3 tsp vanilla
Preheat oven to 300 degrees (F). In a large bowl combine oats, wheat germ, coconut, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and nuts. Mix well. In a large saucepan combine the remaining ingredients. Heat until sugar is disolved, but do not boil. Pour sugar mix over dry ingredients and mix until well coated. Spead onto cookie sheets with sides or 5- 9x 13 pans. Bake 20-30 minutes and 15 minutes longer inf you want a crunchier texture. Cool and put in airtight container. Use within 6 months. Makes about 20 cups.
YUM!!
Southwick Special (also called Triple C)
12 large shreaded wheats or 4 pkgs, crumbled
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups rolled wheat (I like rolled barley too)
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered milk, non instant
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup sesame seeds
Mix in a large bowl. Add 1/2 cup brown sugar (firmly packed) and mix in with a slotted spoon. Store in an airtight container. Makes 14-16 cups.
Serve with cold milk and eat like cereal.
Yum again! I hope you can find some use for these! I’m sure that we will…my kids are already begging for the granola for snack time!

Elephants in our neighborhood
Filed Under Kids, parenting | Leave a Comment
As I was getting ready for bed the other night groggy and grumpy Cookie stumbled out of her room. I managed a pleasant “What’s wrong sweetheart?” as I inwardly grumbled that she was awake just a short 1 1/2 hours after she had gone to bed.
“Elephants” she says, still half asleep!
My response? “Elephants aren’t allowed in Maricopa” (the city we live in). Now, looking back, I feel a little bad that I wasn’t a little more kind and understanding, but when you mix exhaustion with pregnancy hormones sometimes it is bound to happen.
I love you my Cookie! You make me smile!

Last night I made some delicious chocolate chip cookies…and I promised the kids some for snack time today. When it comes time for snack I say, “Time for snack…its cookies” and they say…
“No, we want apples”!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could hardly believe it. So I asked if they were sure and they were…so now they are eating apples.
What am I eating? The cookies of course!
